Statement On National Indigenous History Month

National Indigenous Peoples Month is a time to celebrate the strength, innovation, and enduring contributions of Indigenous Peoples from coast to coast to coast. It is also an opportunity to recognize the powerful connection between culture, community, and economic prosperity.

Indigenous economies are not new.  They are rooted in generations of trade, stewardship, reciprocity and collective well-being.

When Indigenous businesses succeed, the impact is far reaching.  They create jobs, strengthen families, inspire innovation, and build resilient local economies.  They open doors for the next generation and demonstrate what is possible when indigenous vision and leadership are supported.

Indigenous economic development is about more than business, it’s about self-determination.  It’s about communities shaping their own futures and building prosperity on their own terms.

There is growing momentum across Canada to support this work.  At the same time, we must ensure that progress continues forward.  True economic reconciliation requires sustained commitment and turning intent into action.  The path forward is a shared one and it depends on consistent follow-through on the commitments that reconciliation demands.

Indigenous prosperity is not separate from Canada’s prosperity; it is essential to it.  When Indigenous economies grow, all Canadians benefit.  Stronger communities, stronger businesses, and a stronger national economy are outcomes we all share.

We invite Canadians to be part of this shared path forward.  Support Indigenous-owned businesses.  Build partnerships.  Invest in Indigenous-led solutions.  These actions matter and they move us all closer to a more inclusive and prosperous future.

Together, we can ensure that Indigenous prosperity is not only recognized but fully realized for communities today and for generations to come.
