Position Summary

The Communications Specialist plays a pivotal role in executing the organization’s communication strategies to enhance its visibility, reputation, and engagement with various stakeholders. This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver compelling messaging through various platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Content Creation

  • Develops high-quality written content for various platforms including website, social media, press releases, newsletters, and marketing materials.
  • Ensures consistency in tone, style, and messaging while adhering to brand guidelines.
  • Conducts thorough research on relevant topics to produce accurate and informative content.

Media Relations

  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers.
  • Drafts and distributes press releases, pitches, and media advisories.
  • Coordinates interviews, press conferences, and media appearances for organizational spokespeople.

Social Media Management

  • Manages and monitors the organization’s social media accounts to increase engagement and reach.
  • Develops and executes social media campaigns to promote events, initiatives, and key messages.
  • Analyzes social media metrics and prepares reports to evaluate performance and inform strategy.

Marketing

  • Collaborates with the Communications Manager to integrate communications efforts with digital marketing initiatives.
  • Provides support for events and tradeshows.
  • Assists in the development and execution of email marketing campaigns, online advertising, and search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Engages with stakeholders including donors, volunteers, partners, and community members to foster positive relationships.
  • Responds to inquiries and feedback in a timely and professional manner.
  • Represents the organization at events, conferences, and networking opportunities.

Crisis Communication

  • Assists in developing crisis communication plans and protocols.
  • Provides support during crisis situations by drafting statements, managing media inquiries, and coordinating responses.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Monitors media coverage and industry trends to identify opportunities and potential risks.
  • Prepares regular reports on communication activities, including key metrics, achievements, and areas for improvement.

Qualifications

Education

  • The position requires a minimum of a 2-Year College Diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or Marketing. While a post-secondary degree is preferred, candidates with a combination of relevant experience and education may also be considered.

Experience

  • 3 to 4 years of experience in communications, media, public relations, or related roles.
  • Prior experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organization is preferred.

Abilities, Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency in modern productivity tools, social media management tools, content management systems, and analytics platforms.
